We call it an average because wool is a natural product. Since it comes from different breeds of sheep across the Midwest, nutrient levels can vary slightly from batch to batch. This ratio is based on professional nutrient analysis, so it is still a reliable guide.

NPK stands for Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. Nitrogen supports leafy growth, chlorophyll production, and overall plant health. Phosphorus helps with root development, flowering, and fruiting, although most Midwest soils already have enough of it. Potassium improves plant strength, water regulation, and stress tolerance.

When the grade statement is labeled 9-0-3, it means 9 percent nitrogen, 0 percent phosphorus, and 3 percent potassium.

Macro vs. Micro Nutrients

Plants need both macronutrients and micronutrients to grow properly.

Macronutrients are needed in larger amounts and include nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These are responsible for the main growth of the plant, including leaves, roots, and overall development.

Micronutrients are needed in smaller amounts but are still essential. These include nutrients like iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and boron. They help with plant processes like nutrient uptake, enzyme function, and overall balance.

The Right Way to Think About It

One pound of wool pellets provides about 0.09 pounds of nitrogen. Most vegetables need about 0.1 to 0.3 pounds of nitrogen per 100 square feet.

For example, if your plants need about 0.2 pounds of nitrogen, dividing 0.2 by 0.09 equals about 2.2 pounds of wool pellets.

That is why the recommended rate is 1 to 2 pounds per 100 square feet. More is not always better. Using the correct amount protects your plants, your soil, and your wallet.

How to Use the Wool Pellet Calculator

First, choose your crop type. Light feeders include crops like peas and herbs. Moderate feeders include lettuce, carrots, and strawberries. Heavy feeders include tomatoes, corn, and broccoli.

Next, convert nitrogen into wool pellets using the formula nitrogen needed divided by 0.09.

Then, adjust for your bed size by multiplying your bed size divided by 100 by the nitrogen needed per 100 square feet divided by 0.09.

Finally, apply the pellets. Light feeders typically need about 1 to 1.15 pounds per 100 square feet. Moderate feeders need about 2 to 2.25 pounds, and heavy feeders need about 3 pounds. For heavy feeders or long-season crops, you can reapply half the rate mid-season.

Why Wool Pellets Are Different
