Fine wool, which has a lower micron count, is prized in the textile industry for making soft, high-quality garments. In contrast, coarse wool, short fibers, or fleece contaminated with debris, manure, or vegetable matter often has limited or no commercial textile value. This type of wool is frequently categorized as low-grade.
In many regions, low-grade wool does not enter the textile supply chain at all. Instead, it is:
- Stockpiled on farms
- Sent to landfills
- Burned or otherwise disposed of
This practice represents both an environmental burden and a missed economic opportunity. Discarding wool not only wastes a natural, renewable resource but also overlooks its inherent chemical and biological value.
Wool is composed primarily of keratin, a protein that contains essential plant nutrients. It contains approximately 9–12% nitrogen (McGregor, 2003), along with smaller amounts of sulfur and trace minerals. These nutrients are slowly released as the material breaks down, making wool particularly suitable as a slow-release soil amendment.
Rather than discarding lower-quality fleece, processing it into wool pellets transforms it into a practical soil amendment. Pelletization makes wool easier to handle, transport, and apply while preserving its nutrient content. Once incorporated into soil, when irrigated the pellet will expand increasing soil porosity and water holding capacity. Wool pellets gradually decompose, providing a steady supply of nutrients to plants over time.
